FUNNY SKI AND SNOWBOARD CLIPS
With this blog I'm going to take a wee break and focus on something that has been brought to my attention. These are some incredibly amazing aawwwch moments that were lucky enough to be caught by the camera.
REALLY BAD CRASHES
The ski slopes need respect, snowsports is an extreme sport which can seriously damage your health, even for the most experienced skier or boarder.
As
you can see from the first clip these skiers are racers and years and years of
practice and physical training has gone into their training and yes this can
still happen. Now as you can see these guys are going at a fair speed so when
they crash it really hurts, often resulting in broken bones and I'm not talking
about fingers or arms I'm talking about backs, hips, necks. These injuries take
year to fix in some cases and yes when they do the racers go right back to the
top of a ski slope as fast as they can.

THE SKI SALE
Glasgow Ski and Board
The
sale is run over two days
Friday nights are for members only.
Saturday morning is open to members and
non-members.
Members
bring in equipment that is no longer of use, or their children have grown out
of, these are then put up for sale.
This
is a fantastic occasion for anyone looking to update kit or those who are new
to the sport wanting to purchase ski equipment or clothing, all of which is in
incredible condition.
There
is always new ski equipment on sale such as helmets, clothing and ski goods, and
all at really knocked down prices which is usually better than sale stock
from the stores themselves. The reason this equipment is on sale, it's last
year's and in the fashion world that means it is out of date. the company that
supply now have new up to date stock to sell, so the ski club and their members
benefit.
I
have bought from this sale every year that I have been a member of the club. It
is a terrific way to kit out the kids, as buying skis and boots new can be
really expensive and the children grow out of them in no time.
All
of the goods on sale are in terrific condition and there is normally
a queue of members on the Friday night, as everyone likes a bargain. On sale
are goods such as
- Skis + Boots + Poles
- Snowboards + Boots
- Helmets + Goggles
- Body protection + including legs and arm protection
- Gloves + hats +scarf's
- Children's clothing = waterproof trousers +jackets + thermals
- Ladies clothing = waterproof trousers +jackets + under layers
- Gents clothing = waterproof trousers +jackets + fleeces + jumpers
- Ski, Board and boot bags
This has proven to be a very successful way of recycling ski goods
as well as being a very successful night for the club. The members look forward
to this being held every year.

OPEN DAYS AT THE SKI CLUB = BARGAN MEMBERSHIPS
Open
days at the ski clubs are a great opportunity for the general public to pick up
huge bargains with memberships.
Glasgow Ski and Board hold their open
day every August, this is a great time to grab a bargain on
memberships.
There are
raffle tickets on sale and the prizes that can be won include family
memberships, discounts on memberships and free lessons. Activities that
the club provide are available to try such as Skiing, Snowboarding
and Tubing. Other activities such as beat the goalie and lots of
little games that everyone can take part in are ongoing throughout the day and
there is a tombola table which is always popular plus home cooked goodies
(this is always first to sell out as the baking is fab). There
are often bouncy castles/runs, a climbing wall and other fun
things to do.
Every
year demonstrations take place on the main slope by those talented ski
instructors or race training team and also the freestyle slope
usually has a display by those mad gifted freestyler kids doing crazy extreme jumps
and flips on the other slope. WOW
Best of all are the offers for those
taking out a membership on the day and believe me it is always mobbed with lots
of people queuing for great deals on memberships.
Bearsden Ski Club has an open day each
year which also offers massive discounts on all membership
packages.
This
is usually held on or around October/November of each year supplying lots of
free taster lessons on skiing for children and adults. There are many
free sessions on available for tubing and weather permitting a
BBQ which always smells fantastic making everyone hungry.
The
membership supply 3 blocks of group lessons for children at £6 per block
instead of £80 and adults receive 2 blocks of group lessons at £6 per block
instead of £90.
Group
lessons consist of 6 hours per block
- 4-6 years will have 6 one hour lessons per block
- 7 years up will do 4 one and a half hour lessons
- adults have 3 two hour lessons.
Adults can swap one block of lessons
for a gym membership at the price of £6 and all memberships include free entry
onto the slope and include skis/snowboards and boots which members can use all
year long.

SECOND, SKI, LESSON
Tonight
I will continue with my ski lessons weather permitting. At the
moment conditions are severe with really low temperatures and snowy
conditions I know it's skiing, snow and all, but will the car make it over
to the other side of Glasgow?
Now that is the question .
INTERVIEWS
Before we get to the interviews check this out
Bearsden Ski Club
The first instructor that I interviewed started to ski when he was ten years old and qualified as a ski instructor when he was 16 years obtaining his Alpine BASI Level 1. He works at Bearsden Ski Club instructing as well as working in the boot room earning as he attends university. The best advice that he would give to anyone new to the sport would be "Take it easy and don't get ahead of yourself".
After going through the levels he then joined the racing team for a while then moved to the freestyle section as he enjoys the freedom and the adrenalin rush.
Q.One of the questions that I asked him was how did you get to instructor level?
A. His answer "was lots and lots of practice".
My next instructor started to ski at the young age of 8 and qualified for his BASI 1 at 16, he is still at school and enjoys the freedom to be able to ski in many different countries. He has never competed in any competitions and the best advice that he can give is "Don't give up".
Q. I asked - How did you get to the level enabling you to qualify for teaching?
A. His answer was "lots of practice and ski holiday's as well as the mighty Donnie Morris". (Donnie Morris is one of the Bearsden's ski coaches)
This next instructor started to ski at 6 years old and then moved on to snowboarding at 11 years, he qualified as a snowboard instructor at 17 years and is still at school. He teaches at Bearsden Ski Club.
Q. I asked him how did you get to this level ?
A. His answer was "regularly riding at Bearsden Ski Club and lots of practice"
Q. What advice would you give to someone beginning to board?
A. "Persevere"
Q. What level have you attained in snowboarding and do you compete in competitions?
A. "I'm in the GB Freestyle Snowboard Team as well as the GB Park and Pipe Team. I have competed internationally and I am currently on the British Snowboard Team on a Olympic Performance Pathway and have previously won a Bronze Medal at the British Champs".
C,C started skiing at the age of 10 and qualified at 16 years and is a BASI Alpine level 1 ski instructor, he also teaches at Bearsden Ski Club earning as he is at university. He never competed or raced so I asked him how he got his qualification and his answer was "Lots of practice and asking for assistance when needed".
Q. What advice would you give to those new to the sport?
A. "Skiing is a sport that requires practice, so beginners keep the practice constant".
Q. What do you like most about the sport?
A."I believe skiing is a fantastic sport, which has impacted my life in a major way. Living within walking distance of Bearsden Ski Club has been a massive advantage for me. Skiing in Scotland is a very special experience compared with skiing abroad as usually a trip abroad takes weeks to plan where as in Scotland the snow slopes are easily accessible. I'd perhaps say that the diversity of the sport is my favourite aspect as most people generally associate skiing with snow, but at Bearsden Ski Club no snow is no problem.
Having hypothesized when I was younger that skiing was only for people who wanted to do racing but when I started I realised it was for everyone. I discovered freestyle which was a totally different experience, it allowed me to establish my own style. I did realise that after several years of freestyle I wanted to evolve into a more rounded skier which was when I decided to begin my instructor training".
As we can see from the interviews conducted these instructors all have very different ideas and styles, but the one thing that they all say is practice, don't give up and persevere and take it easy.
PARTIES
Parties, Social Events, Birthday
parties, are all available at both Bearsden and Bellahouston ski clubs.
