The Freestyle section is rapidly expanding due
to being highlighted in the 2014 winter Olympics making extreme sport more popular than ever.
Extreme Snow sports is alive and thriving in
Glasgow with many of the competitions drawing in big crowds. Challengers come
from far afield due to competitions being so highly sponsored, this means the
winners receive fantastic prizes. Bellahouston Ski
Club hold the Big at Bella competition each year and Bearsden have the
Westbeach competition as well as Go Big or Go Home, this is one of
the major comps and is success means they often have to limit the
intake or it would last for days.
These
guys are really chilled out and so passionate about their sport, it's hard to
believe they are about to pull off such unbelievable stunts, they really love
living life to the full in the fast lane and I really mean fast. One of the big
must have's for these skiers and boarders are (and I hope you don't mind me
saying) they are all a wee bit crazy
probably due to the fact they crash so much in aid off pulling of those outrageous upside- down jumps that they
do. Jumps and tricks are performed by the riders launching themselves from the
large kicker and table-top jump often travelling high into the air, as well as using
a huge selection of rails.
Bearsden Ski Club have a thriving
Freestyle coaching program run by Neil MacGrain, which has produced
many really impressive athletes, coming through the ranks who have the ability
to compete worldwide. One of which competes internationally and is currently
training with the British Snowboard team on a Olympic Performance Pathway,
winning a Bronze Medal at the British Champs and is also in the GB Freestyle
Snowboard Team and GB Park and Pipe Team.
Freestyle snow sports
in the Glasgow Ski Clubs is becoming more popular as high quality competitors draw
high level competitions, this is the reason Glasgow dry ski slopes are now on
the map.
